Event Details

The two-day National Conference on Bioprospecting: Sustainable Innovations in Healthcare & Agriculture, organized by the Somaiya School of Basic and Applied Sciences, will be held on 5th – 6th December 2025 at Somaiya Vidyavihar University, Mumbai. This conference aims to bring together leading researchers, academicians, industry professionals, and students to explore the transformative potential of bioprospecting in driving sustainable solutions across healthcare and agricultural sectors. Through keynote lectures, panel discussions, and paper presentations, the event will highlight innovations in natural product discovery, Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience, microbial applications, and eco-friendly farming practices. It will serve as a dynamic platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge exchange, and networking, fostering new ideas and partnerships that contribute to sustainable development and scientific advancement in India.

Bioprospecting, also known as biodiversity prospecting’, involves the scientific investigation aimed at discovering novel bioactive compounds, genes, or substances from natural sources. These natural products have significant applications in healthcare and agriculture, contributing to sustainable development across various sectors. Over the past decade, there has been intensified research on natural products as therapeutic agents for conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. In the field of agriculture, bioprospecting has resulted in the discovery of novel products that boost crop production and offer protection to plants. Today’s world is challenged by climate change, antibiotic resistance, food insecurity, and limited resources, hence the need for sustainable, nature-based solutions has become increasingly urgent. Bioprospecting presents a viable approach to responsibly harness the potential of nature, aligning with global objectives such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the National Education Policy (2020), which emphasizes the revival of the Traditional Knowledge System. The conference seeks to integrate traditional knowledge with advanced scientific research to address global challenges in healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. It also aims to provide a platform for researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, and community stakeholders to collaborate and present sustainable innovations. The broader vision of the meeting is to initiate a dialogue towards a more inclusive and sustainable future.
